Pull in → pull out

Five things that happen every time

The same order of operations on every car that comes through the door, whether it is a five-quart oil change or a brake job.

01

You pull in

No booking, no app, no waiting on a slot next Tuesday. Walk in any morning we are open and get in line. If your car arrives on a tow before we unlock, it goes into the queue that same morning.

02

The look-over

Before you get a number, somebody actually looks at the car. The inspection costs you nothing, and you get told what we found in plain language, straight to the point.

03

The number, first

You hear what it costs before a wrench moves, and you decide. No upsell, no padded estimate, and nothing on the invoice you did not agree to.

04

The work

ASE-certified technicians, Castrol oil, and a bay that has been doing fluid changes, brakes, suspension, electrical, A/C and diagnostics on this corner since 1989 — so whatever is wrong with your car has almost certainly come through these doors before.

05

The honest no

If it is not a job for this shop, we say so and point you at somebody who can do it. You are not going to pay us to find out we cannot help.

The bay

A Castrol shop, not a quick-lube conveyor

Two bays, a lift, oil drains and a wall of filters. The same crew does your oil change and your brakes, so nobody hands you off to a stranger and nobody guesses. Quick when it can be quick, careful when it needs to be careful.

Inside the Grendel’s service bay in Niles: an SUV up on the lift under fluorescent light, yellow walls, oil drains, a tool chest and a Castrol sign.

The Grendel’s waiting room: four black chairs along a window into the bay, an ASE Certified placard and an Interstate Batteries sign.
The waiting room, with a window straight into the bay.
The Grendel’s front counter with the Castrol price board, a check-engine-light chart and maintenance posters on the wall.

The owner

Andy

Customers do not write about “the shop.” They write about Andy by name, over and over, going back more than fifteen years. He is on the floor, and he is the one who tells you what your car needs before anybody starts on it.

“I can’t say enough about how efficient and honest Andy is. I live in Roselle and have my car towed to this location because Andy is so trustworthy!”

“So far only went there for oil changes, but I’m very satisfied. Took my wife’s then daughter’s cars two different days. They were able to see me right away both times. Performed the oil changes quickly. Everyone was friendly. Will definitely return and would recommend.”

“Been going here a bit over a year now for oil changes & general car issues. Great service & everyone is always extremely helpful. My car recently had a muffler issue that they weren’t able to repair and they recommended me to a great shop that was able to help that same day. Would highly recommend Grendel’s to anyone.”

“I was visiting the area from out of town. My windshield wiper stopped working right before I was about to make a 3.5 hour trip home in a snowstorm. I had no appointment, but they were super friendly and fixed it right away. I’m very thankful for them!”

Before you drive over

The questions we get asked most

Do I need an appointment for an oil change?
No. Walk-ins are how most people get here. Call ahead at (847) 965-0155 if you want to know how busy the bays are before you leave the house.
How long does an oil change take?
Rapid is in the name. Most oil changes are finished well inside an hour, and on a quiet morning you can be in and out in about thirty minutes. Busy mornings run longer, so call if you are on a clock.
Will you tell me the price before you start?
It sounds like you have had a quote turn into a bigger bill somewhere. Yes — prices are posted on the board above the counter, and you are quoted before any work begins. Nothing gets added to the bill that you did not agree to.
Do you do more than oil changes?
Considerably more. Engine diagnostics and emissions repairs, brakes, steering and suspension, batteries, charging systems and electrical work, A/C and coolant systems, belts and hoses, tune-ups, tires and flat repairs. Full auto repair is on the sign, not just the oil change.
Are your technicians certified?
Yes. Grendel’s employs technicians certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence — which in plain terms means the person under your car was tested on the work, not just hired to do it. The ASE seal is on the pole sign out front and the placard is on the waiting-room wall.
What oil do you use?
Castrol. Conventional, high mileage, synthetic blend and full synthetic are all on the board, and you pick the one you want for your car. Nobody moves you up to the expensive one on your behalf.
Can I have my car towed in?
Yes, and people do — from the shoulder of 294, from home, from other suburbs. If the car is here when we open, it goes into the queue that morning.
Where exactly are you?
8657 N Milwaukee Ave, Niles, IL 60714, on the west side of Milwaukee just north of the Chicago line, with parking in front of the bay doors. Plus code 25QG+87 Niles.
What if it is not a job you can do?
A lot of people feel wary about being sent somewhere else, because usually it means somebody is guessing. What most have found here is the opposite: if it is not a job for this shop we say so and point you at one that can do it. You are not going to pay us to find out we cannot help.
How long have you been on Milwaukee Ave?
Since 1989. Plenty of the people who pull in have been coming here for fifteen years and more.
